I am so excited to introduce Celeste of @thetruespoon to the blog! Known for her glowing skin tips, Celeste is a wealth of knowledge. I LIVE for Celeste's Fermentation Fridays where she shares her home fermentation methods. I've seriously learned so much from this beauty. A Registered Nurse, Celeste uses a mix of holistic and allopathic practices, which is something I know many people appreciate in today's world of wellness. Tell us a little bit about yourself! I was born on Oahu but spent most of my life in Oregon. I’m an only child and true extravert. My primary passion in life is sharing the things in life that have contributed to my wellness and overall happiness to try to improve the lives of others.
What is your zodiac sign? Gemini sun and rising with an Aries moon (get shit done necessity).
Tell us about your journey to starting The True Spoon! Being a true West Coast kid I had the good fortune to grow up with parents that instilled clean eating and active living before I knew that life could be lived any other way. My dads’ side of the family is very entrepreneurial sparking an innate self-confidence and creative spirit from a young age. My mom side is full of strong women, all of homework in healthcare. I had a strong passion for art and science as a kid and my mom directed me toward science as much as possible. I decided to go to nursing school and fall in my grandmother and aunts footsteps so that I could use my love for science and outgoing nature to help people. During nursing school I learned the physiological and anatomical impact of a healthy lifestyle, but I knew that Western medicine alone was not enough to create the holistic wellness that I wanted to achieve. After college I moved into a house in Northeast Portland with roommates from nursing school and we ordered a monthly CSA basket, we cooked primarily vegan plant-based food, and I had never felt better in my life. I was inspired to share these plant-based recipes, The True Spoon was born! I primarily shared my recipes with friends and relatives for years not promoting my blog as a brand or anything more than a hobby. I was working in the operating room at the time, only nursing job I could get right out of school, and hating every minute of it. Finally move to LA chasing a boy and sunshine, not knowing that my intuition had far more to do with me moving to Los Angeles then the guy I was dating.
I was so inspired by the entrepreneurs, innovators, and artist I was meeting in LA. LA energy inspired me to start promoting my brand with an entire lifestyle component. Recipes, restaurant reviews, travel, you name it, I wanted to share all of my joy with as many people as possible. The other Gemini twin of my life was my nursing career, my love for beauty and women’s health lead me to the field of aesthetics. Connecting with women and helping them feel better about themselves through different treatments and skin care regimen‘s felt closer to my True purpose than any other nursing track. The process of growth and examination I learned that my knowledge of beauty and skincare combined with my passion for holistic wellness was of much value to the people in my life weather it be friends or followers. I found my niche in holistic skincare and sharing my knowledge with the world brings me infinite happiness.
What does a day in the life of Celeste look like? Being the Gemini I am, my weeks tend to bifurcate on my True Spoon days. I wake up early (ok I actually wake up early everyday, I’m a freak early bird) and do a 10-15 minute meditation practice, (I’ll be sharing that soon on the True Spoon), I engage in some sort of skin detoxification fitness practice like Infrared yoga or my French girl fitness plan, I drink a crazy green smoothie full of adaptogens, antioxidants, and all of the amazing skin food my body needs. After my smoothie I will start working on content, whether that be a seasonal skin care post, or sharing my skin care practices on Instastories, then getting back to emails and brainstorming future brand collaborations. Then when possible I love to make dinner for my handsome fiancé. I love being able to create a wonderful environment for him to come home to after a long stressful day. I like to be the feminine energy and my relationship and as strong of a woman as I am, I love cooking for my man and having quiet time at home. The other half of my Gemini life, I am an aesthetic RN and I work at Alchemy 43, an aesthetics bar specializing in Microtreatments, where I help women look and feel their best through non surgical skin treatments like micropenning, Botox, and fillers.
You are the fermentation goddess! How have fermented foods helped you? I’ll gladly accept that claim to fame any day my love. The honest truth is everything... but I never really gave much thought to probiotics until a friend brought me to a fermentation workshop in 2014 lead by Lacy Phillips of Free + Native. I learned about the benefits of probiotics and how to make my own fermented foods at home, on that day, my game was changed. I personally love arduous kitchen crafts so I took to home fermenting immediately. I began eating my probiotic home ferments everyday and seeing some major changes. Pre probiotics I had dull, sensitive, acne prone skin, and I was very self-conscious about it. After a few weeks I started to see changes in my skin, my breakouts were dissipating, I was ecstatic! As the weeks went on I started getting compliments from friends, multiple people commented on my new glowy skin. My only lifestyle change was the probiotics, it was a dramatic shift that inspired me to share my fermentation practices on my blog and social media platforms. I’ve even gone on to offer DIY workshops to help spread the word about the power of probiotics.
Tell us about your French Girl Fitness Plan! #FGFP was inspired by my trip to France in May. I was shocked by the overwhelming number of lean silhouettes that filled the streets. Do the French spend all day doing ballet and Pilates? No. Through a little investigation and observation I realized that all the French babes were just walking everywhere. I decided to go full guinea pig detective to test this fitness regimen. #Fgfp is simply a walking plan that mimics the “walking commute” lifestyle that most French ladies live. I stopped all of my other fitness faves (weight lifting, yoga, Pilates, spinning, and BBG) to test the plan for two weeks (now I incorporate 1-2 yoga or Pilates classes a week too) I felt amazing so detoxified and light. I’ve been adhering to this work out for eight months and my body has never looked or felt better. This fitness plan assists in achieving a long lean body and burning tons of fat while being easy on your joints. I know this fitness regime sounds too easy to be effective but sometimes it’s the simple things that actually work! The physiological reasoning behind this fitness plan is all about LISS aka low intensity steady speed cardio. I learned about LISS from the fitness phenom behind the Bikini Body Guide, Kayla Itsines. Kayla taught me that LISS is great for fat and weight loss because walking burns the most fat per calorie compared to jogging and sprinting. This form of slower cardio also increases blood oxygenation, increasing metabolic rate. Beyond fat reduction walking can also improve digestion, sleep, and mood!
What is the biggest message you want to share through your platform? I truly want to inspire women to feel their best and fill their own personal wellness cup. Women are so giving and often overextend themselves to help everyone else. If I can enrich a busy mothers life by inspiring her to do a non-toxic facemask or drink a organic beauty-boosting smoothie or start a fermentation practice, then her entire family will receive the benefit of that self care vibration!
